What are the first signs of allergic rhinitis?

Allergic rhinitis is inflammation inside the nose after the immune system reacts to an allergen such as pollen, dust mites or animal dander. Symptoms may appear soon after exposure and can include nasal itching, postnasal drip, reduced smell and a sore or itchy throat.

Congestion can disturb sleep and contribute to snoring. A nosebleed may happen when the lining is dry or irritated, but repeated bleeding needs separate attention. A clear pattern of triggers supports the possibility of allergy, without proving the cause.

Notice where and when symptoms occur, then reduce exposure where practical. Rinse your face after outdoor exposure, keep bedroom fabrics clean and avoid smoke. Saline rinsing may clear irritants when used safely with suitable water and clean equipment.

A pharmacist can discuss allergy medication, including whether a nasal spray or another option fits your age and health. Do not use decongestant sprays for longer than the product instructions. Seek review if symptoms remain troublesome despite these measures.

Arrange medical review for persistent one-sided blockage, repeated nosebleeds, facial pain, fever, loss of smell that does not improve or symptoms interfering with sleep. Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips or tongue, severe breathing difficulty or a rapidly spreading reaction.
