What are the first signs of acid reflux?

Reflux happens when stomach contents move upwards into the food pipe. You may notice heartburn after a large meal, when bending over or when lying down. Bitter or sour liquid can reach the throat, and some people develop belching, nausea or indigestion.

Reflux can also irritate the throat and voice box. A hoarse voice, sore throat or repeated throat clearing may occur without obvious heartburn. Postnasal drip can feel similar, so the pattern and triggers matter. These symptoms do not confirm one diagnosis by themselves.

Keep a brief symptom diary noting meals, timing, body position and drinks or foods that seem to trigger discomfort. Try smaller meals, remain upright after eating and avoid lying down soon after food. If symptoms recur, arrange a GP consultation for an assessment rather than relying on repeated self-treatment.

Nutrition counselling may help identify a balanced routine without unnecessary restriction. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice, because some medicines can affect reflux and need review rather than abrupt withdrawal.

Seek urgent care for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, fainting, vomiting blood or black stools. Arrange prompt medical review for difficulty swallowing, food sticking, repeated vomiting, unexplained weight loss or symptoms that persist or worsen.
