What are the alternatives to stereotactic body radiotherapy?

Surgery may remove a localised tumour when its position and your health make an operation suitable. Conventional radiotherapy gives treatment over more sessions and may be chosen when a larger area needs treatment or nearby organs require a different dose pattern. Cancer medicines travel through the body and may be used when disease is outside one treatment area, or when tumour biology suggests a drug-based approach. Monitoring can be reasonable for selected small, slow-growing or stable findings, with planned scans and clinical review. SBRT uses highly focused radiation, so the alternative depends on whether the priority is tissue removal, broader treatment, whole-body control or avoiding an operation.

Ask which organs are close to the tumour and how that affects dose, surgery or drug choice. Discuss the treatment goal, number of visits, recovery, effects on breathing or nearby nerves, and whether a biopsy or additional scan is needed. For non-small cell lung cancer, ask whether lung surgery such as a lobectomy is possible and how lung function would be assessed. A linear accelerator may deliver different radiotherapy schedules, but the planning method and treatment intensity can vary.

Tell your cancer team promptly about worsening breathlessness, coughing blood, chest pain, new weakness, severe headache, confusion or difficulty swallowing. Seek emergency help for severe breathing trouble, sudden neurological changes or heavy bleeding. These symptoms require assessment even while you are deciding between treatments.
