What Are the Alternatives to PUVA Therapy?

PUVA combines a psoralen medicine with UVA exposure. Psoralen changes how skin cells respond to UVA, so an alternative may avoid the medicine or use a different treatment pathway. Narrowband UVB phototherapy is a light-only approach delivered in carefully planned sessions. It may be considered for some inflammatory skin conditions, but the correct choice depends on the diagnosis, affected areas, skin type, and previous response.

Psoriasis and mycosis fungoides can require different treatment plans even when phototherapy is discussed for both. Some people may need topical or systemic medicines, while others may need monitoring, combination treatment, or a different form of specialist care. A light treatment should not be selected solely because it is easier to access.

Ask the treating clinician to explain the aim of therapy, expected visit pattern, eye and skin precautions, and how response will be checked. Provide a full medicine list and mention liver problems, light sensitivity, previous skin cancers, pregnancy, and any difficulty attending regular sessions. Keep a record of flares, new patches, itching, and treatments already tried so the plan reflects the course of your condition.

Contact your clinician promptly for blistering, severe burning, persistent redness, eye pain, or a rapidly worsening rash after phototherapy. A new, changing, bleeding, or non-healing patch also needs assessment rather than another light session. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a widespread reaction after a medicine.
