What are the alternatives to medical management of miscarriage?

Expectant management means waiting for the body to pass the pregnancy tissue without misoprostol or surgery. Bleeding and cramping can occur, and follow-up is needed to confirm that the miscarriage is complete. This approach may not be suitable when there is heavy bleeding, infection, severe anaemia, or another urgent concern.

Surgical management removes pregnancy tissue through the cervix, usually with suction. It may be considered when bleeding is heavy, infection is suspected, tissue remains, or a person prefers a planned procedure. The clinician will explain the anaesthetic, recovery, and possible effects on future care.

The safest option depends on the type of miscarriage, including a missed miscarriage, ultrasound findings, symptoms, blood results, and your preferences. Misoprostol is a medicine used in medical management; do not take it without a plan from your clinical team.

Ask how the diagnosis was confirmed and what follow-up will show that the uterus is empty. Discuss pain relief, bleeding expectations, blood group considerations, emotional support, and when normal activities can resume.
