What are the alternatives to fracture casting?

The aim is to keep the broken bone in a safe position while it heals and to protect nearby nerves, blood vessels and skin. A splint leaves room for swelling and may be useful early after injury or when regular checks are needed. A removable brace can allow carefully controlled washing or movement when the fracture is stable enough. Closed reduction moves the bone back into alignment without an incision, after which a splint or other support may still be required. Surgery uses plates, screws, wires or other devices when alignment cannot be maintained with external support.

Ask how stable the fracture is, whether the joint surface or growth plate is involved, and what follow-up imaging is planned. A scaphoid fracture may need careful review because healing can be slow, while a growth plate fracture in a child needs attention to the developing bone. Keep the injured area supported as instructed and do not change the device because it feels more comfortable. Physiotherapy usually begins when the treating team considers movement safe.

Get urgent help if fingers or toes become pale, blue, cold, increasingly numb or difficult to move. Severe swelling, escalating pain despite prescribed relief, a tight or wet-smelling support, or an open wound also needs prompt assessment. After reduction or treatment, new deformity or worsening pain should not wait for a routine appointment.
