What are the alternatives to fine needle aspiration?

Fine Needle Aspiration uses a thin needle to collect cells or fluid. A Core Needle Biopsy uses a wider needle to remove small cores of tissue, which preserves more of the structure for laboratory examination. It may be considered when the team needs more detail than individual cells provide.

For a Thyroid Nodule, ultrasound findings, blood tests and changes over time can help determine whether sampling is needed. Some nodules can be monitored with repeat imaging, while others need a tissue diagnosis. Surgery may be discussed when results remain unclear, symptoms are troublesome or the nodule has concerning features.

Ask why FNA was suggested and what uncertainty an alternative would resolve. Share information about blood-thinning medicines, bleeding disorders, pregnancy, allergies and previous biopsy results. Do not stop prescribed medicine unless the treating team gives you a plan.

Ask how the sample will be guided, what type of anaesthetic is used, when results are expected and what happens after an indeterminate result. Bring any earlier scan reports so the team can compare findings.

After a needle procedure, seek prompt advice for increasing swelling, bleeding that does not settle with pressure, fever, spreading redness, severe pain or new difficulty breathing or swallowing. A rapidly enlarging neck swelling needs urgent assessment.
