What are Braxton Hicks contractions?

Short answer
Braxton Hicks contractions are irregular tightenings of the uterus that may occur during pregnancy without causing established labour.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the sensation can mean
You may feel your abdomen become firm and then relax. The tightenings may be uncomfortable, but they often do not develop a regular pattern or steadily become stronger and closer together. Changing position, resting, drinking water, or emptying your bladder may make them settle. They are different from established labour, which has a pattern that continues and changes the cervix.
These contractions can be felt in different parts of the abdomen and may become more noticeable later in pregnancy. A contraction alone cannot confirm whether labour has started; the timing, pattern, other symptoms, and stage of pregnancy all matter.
What you can do
Pause and notice when each tightening starts and ends. Rest on your side, drink fluids, and avoid strenuous activity while you observe the pattern. Contact your maternity team if you are unsure whether the contractions are practice contractions, especially before term. They can advise whether you need an assessment.
When to seek care
Seek urgent maternity advice if contractions become regular or painful, or if you have vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, pelvic pressure, persistent lower back pain, fever, or reduced fetal movement. Symptoms of preterm labour need prompt assessment; you can read more about [Preterm Labour](/conditions/preterm-labour/).
Questions for your doctor or midwife
Ask: How should I time these tightenings? Which changes mean I should come to the maternity unit? Could my symptoms suggest early labour? What should I do if fluid leaks or fetal movement changes?
