What should you know about wet bandage for eczema?

Wet wraps can reduce the sensation of heat and itching while the skin is covered. The damp layer helps keep emollient against the skin; the dry outer layer helps hold it in place and protects against scratching. This approach is generally considered for an active flare with very dry, inflamed, or excoriated areas, often for a limited period and with clinician instruction.

The material should be clean, comfortable, and appropriate for the body site. Wet coverings are not suitable over untreated infection, and prescribed topical medicines should be used only in the way your clinician explains because covering skin can alter how strongly they act.

Ask a clinician to demonstrate the method, including which moisturiser or medicine to apply, how damp the inner layer should be, how long to leave it on, and when to change it. Wash hands, use clean soft fabric, keep the wrap comfortably damp rather than dripping, and check the skin regularly. Stop and seek advice if burning, pain, numbness, worsening redness, rash spreading, or shivering develops. Do not wrap around the neck or restrict circulation.

Contact a clinician promptly for crusting, pus, increasing warmth, swelling, fever, or rapidly worsening eczema, as these can signal infection. Seek urgent help for facial or eye swelling, breathing difficulty, or a severe reaction after applying a product.
