What should you know about a Welch otoscope?

During an ear check, a clinician gently positions a small speculum at the canal opening and views the skin, wax, and eardrum. The examination can support assessment of pain, reduced hearing, itching, discharge, or a blocked sensation. It may reveal inflammation, fluid, a foreign object, or a tear, but the image is only one part of the assessment. Symptoms can arise from areas that an otoscope cannot inspect, so a normal-looking view may not end the evaluation.

Bring a list of ear medicines and mention previous ear problems or surgery. Avoid inserting objects into the canal, including cotton buds, because this can push wax deeper or injure delicate skin. Stay still during the examination and tell the clinician about pain. If the ear is too tender to examine fully, ask what safer next step is appropriate.

Arrange prompt care for new hearing loss, persistent ear pain, discharge, bleeding, or a foreign object. Emergency assessment is appropriate for facial weakness, severe dizziness, swelling behind the ear, or severe illness with ear symptoms. A child who is difficult to wake, very distressed, or worsening with fever needs timely review.
