What should you know about a Welch Allyn wall otoscope?

A clinician uses the otoscope with a clean speculum to look at the outer canal and eardrum. The view may help identify earwax, irritation, swelling, discharge, a foreign object, or changes behind the eardrum. The device does not measure hearing and cannot by itself determine the cause of ear pain. A clear view can sometimes be limited by wax, tenderness, a narrow canal, or movement, especially in a young child.

Do not put cotton buds, hairpins, or other objects into the ear before the appointment. Tell the clinician about pain, drainage, hearing change, recent injury, or previous ear surgery. A child may sit on a caregiver's lap while the clinician gently steadies the head. The examination is brief, but report sharp pain so the approach can be adjusted. Further assessment may include a hearing check or another test if the view does not explain the symptoms.

Seek prompt medical advice for severe ear pain, sudden hearing loss, blood or pus from the ear, a lodged object, or fever with a child who seems very unwell. Urgent help is needed for swelling and redness behind the ear, facial weakness, severe dizziness, or a severe headache with ear symptoms.

Ask whether the canal and eardrum were visible, what finding may explain the symptoms, and whether wax removal, treatment, hearing assessment, or review is needed.
