What should you know about the Welch Allyn portable otoscope?

With a suitable viewing tip, the clinician can examine the ear canal and eardrum for irritation, swelling, wax, discharge, a foreign object or signs of fluid behind the eardrum. A clear view may still need to be considered with hearing, pain and temperature symptoms. The device does not test hearing directly and cannot identify every cause of ear symptoms.

Describe the symptom in practical terms: pain, pressure, itching, discharge, blocked hearing or ringing. Mention recent respiratory symptoms, water exposure, trauma and anything placed in the ear. Keep the head still during the examination and say if the tip causes pain. Avoid probing the canal at home, because this can push wax deeper or injure the skin.

Seek prompt medical care for sudden hearing loss, severe or increasing pain, bleeding or pus, a foreign object, or symptoms after an impact to the head or ear. Urgent help is needed if ear symptoms occur with facial weakness, severe dizziness, confusion or a severe headache. Do not rely on a normal-looking ear view to dismiss a serious change in hearing or balance.
