What eardrum movement can add
A clinician may use the pressure feature when the eardrum is visible and the examination calls for it. Movement can add information about how the eardrum responds, but it is interpreted with the ear's appearance, pain, fever, hearing symptoms and medical history. The test is not suitable for every ear, particularly when there is concern about a perforation or recent ear procedure.
During the assessment
Remain as still as possible and tell the clinician about pain, fullness, discharge, ear surgery, tubes or a known eardrum problem. Do not forcefully blow your nose or place objects in the ear before the visit. Children may need reassurance and a caregiver's support. The clinician should stop if the manoeuvre causes significant discomfort.

Seek prompt medical advice for sudden hearing loss, severe ear pain, pus or blood, worsening fever, severe dizziness, or swelling around or behind the ear. Emergency help is needed for collapse, confusion, or a child who appears severely unwell.
