What should you know about Welch Allyn diagnostic otoscopes?

The clinician gently places a clean, single-use or disinfected tip at the ear opening and looks through the instrument. The light helps show swelling, redness, fluid, discharge, wax, or a change in the eardrum. The examination may be done in both ears and compared with your symptoms and hearing.

An otoscope view is one part of an assessment. A blocked canal, a small child’s movement, or discomfort can limit the view. The instrument cannot measure hearing and does not explain every cause of ear pain, ringing, or dizziness.

Tell the clinician about pain, fever, discharge, reduced hearing, recent swimming, injury, or objects placed in the ear. Do not insert cotton buds or other objects before the appointment. Keep still while the ear is examined and say if pressure or pain becomes too strong. Children may benefit from a calm explanation and a parent nearby during a Child Health Consultation.

Seek urgent care for sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness with difficulty walking, facial weakness, swelling behind the ear, or a serious ear injury. Prompt review is also sensible for persistent discharge, severe pain, high fever, or symptoms in a young child who is unusually drowsy or difficult to settle.
