An otoscope combines a light with a viewing system so a clinician can inspect the outer ear canal and the eardrum. The examination may help identify wax, irritation, swelling, discharge, a foreign object or changes associated with an ear infection. The head is used with a suitable handle and a clean, correctly sized disposable speculum.

A clear view is not always possible if wax, pain or swelling blocks the canal. The device cannot assess every cause of ear pain or hearing change, so findings may be considered with symptoms, temperature, balance and hearing history.

Tell the clinician if the ear is painful, draining, recently injured or has had surgery. Keep still while the speculum is positioned; sudden movement can make the examination uncomfortable. Do not put cotton buds, sharp objects or home remedies into the ear before assessment. A child may need reassurance and a calm position so the clinician can examine without force.

Arrange a GP Consultation for persistent ear pain, reduced hearing, discharge, fever or symptoms that return after treatment. Seek urgent care for sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness, swelling behind the ear, a serious ear injury or a child who appears very unwell. Severe pain with facial weakness also needs urgent assessment.
