A Weird Dark Spot on Skin: What Should You Know?

Flat brown or grey marks can appear after acne, eczema, injury, or another inflammation; this is called Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation. Colour alone cannot identify the cause. The spot’s border, texture, location, growth pattern, and symptoms matter. A clinician may inspect it closely and decide whether testing or a different type of treatment is appropriate.

Take a clear photograph in consistent light and note when the mark appeared, whether it followed irritation, and whether its size, border, colour, or surface has changed. Use broad-spectrum sun protection and avoid picking, bleaching mixtures, or unprescribed steroid creams.

Treatment depends on the diagnosis. Options may include a Chemical Peel, Skin Brightening Treatment, or Picosecond Laser Treatment, but procedures can worsen pigment if the cause and skin response are not assessed first.

Book a prompt dermatology review for a spot that changes in size, shape, border, or colour, repeatedly bleeds or crusts, becomes persistently painful or itchy, or looks noticeably different from nearby marks. Do not wait for cosmetic treatment before clarifying a suspicious change.
