Weight loss injections in people with diabetes

Some injections used for weight management also affect signals that regulate appetite, digestion, and blood glucose. They may be considered when excess weight and type 2 diabetes are part of the same care plan. They do not suit everyone and are not interchangeable with insulin or other diabetes medicines.

The choice depends on your glucose pattern, kidney and digestive health, other medicines, eating pattern, and treatment goals. Reduced appetite, nausea, vomiting, constipation, or diarrhoea may affect food and fluid intake, so monitoring matters.

Discuss the injection with the clinician managing your diabetes before changing any medicine. Keep checking glucose as advised, especially if your appetite falls or you take medicines that can lower glucose. Follow the dose schedule, eat regular balanced meals, and maintain hydration. Never stop insulin or alter diabetes tablets on your own.

Seek urgent help for severe low-glucose symptoms, confusion, fainting, repeated vomiting, severe abdominal pain, or inability to keep fluids down. Contact your diabetes team promptly for repeated glucose readings outside your agreed range or if side effects make normal eating and drinking difficult.
