Ways to Treat Vertigo

Short answer
Vertigo treatment depends on its cause and may include repositioning exercises, medicines, balance rehabilitation, or treatment of an underlying ear or neurological problem.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common approach
- Treatment is chosen after considering the trigger, episode pattern, and associated symptoms.
- During an attack
- Sit or lie down and avoid driving or unsafe activity until balance returns.
- Urgent warning
- New weakness, speech trouble, double vision, or inability to stand needs emergency assessment.
How is vertigo treated?
A clinician will ask whether the room seems to spin, what brings the sensation on, how long episodes last, and whether hearing changes, headache, nausea, weakness, or faintness occur. This information helps separate inner-ear causes from migraine and other problems.
What the treatment choices mean
When brief attacks follow turning in bed, looking up, or bending over, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo may be considered. A trained clinician can use a repositioning procedure such as the Epley manoeuvre to move displaced inner-ear crystals. It should be demonstrated safely, especially if you have neck or back problems.
Vertigo linked with nausea may be eased for a short time with prescribed medicine. Medicines do not correct every cause, and prolonged use of some motion-sickness medicines can slow the brain's adaptation and make balance recovery harder. If episodes come with fluctuating hearing, ear pressure, or ringing, assessment for Meniere's disease may be needed. Ear infection or migraine may require a different treatment plan.
What you can do during recovery
Sit or lie down when spinning begins, move your head slowly, and use a handrail when walking. Keep floors clear, improve lighting, and avoid driving, climbing, or operating machinery while symptoms affect your balance. Sip fluids if nausea allows and record triggers, duration, hearing symptoms, headache, and any medicines taken.
Once a clinician has identified the cause, balance exercises or vestibular rehabilitation may help your brain adjust to movement. Follow the exercise instructions rather than repeatedly attempting a manoeuvre from memory. Arrange a review if attacks continue, change pattern, or interfere with work, walking, or sleep.
When to seek medical care
Seek emergency help for vertigo with trouble speaking, new weakness or numbness, facial drooping, double vision, inability to stand, a severe sudden headache, chest pain, fainting, or repeated vomiting. These symptoms can signal a problem that needs urgent assessment.
Arrange prompt medical review for a first or severe episode, new hearing loss, persistent imbalance, fever with ear pain, head injury, or symptoms that keep returning. Do not assume that spinning alone identifies the cause; a breast? no—vertigo symptoms need assessment in context, particularly when other neurological symptoms appear.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: What cause best fits my pattern of symptoms? Do I need a hearing or balance assessment? Is a repositioning manoeuvre suitable for me? Which medicine should I use, for how long, and what side effects should I watch for? When can I safely drive or return to normal activities?

Questions people ask
Can vertigo go away without treatment?
Some episodes settle as the underlying problem improves, but recurring or severe vertigo should be assessed so the cause and safest treatment are clear.
Can I do the Epley manoeuvre at home?
A clinician should first confirm that positional vertigo fits your symptoms and show you the correct movement, particularly if neck, back, or circulation problems make positioning difficult.
Should I take medicine whenever I feel dizzy?
Not necessarily. Dizziness has several causes, and a prescribed medicine may be useful for selected symptoms but may not treat the underlying problem.
