Ways to treat strep throat

Short answer
Strep throat treatment usually combines clinical assessment, symptom relief, and prescribed antibiotics when infection is confirmed or strongly suspected.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding strep throat
Strep throat is an infection of the throat caused by streptococcal bacteria. A sore throat can also result from viruses, irritation, or tonsillitis, so a throat examination and sometimes a swab help guide treatment. Fever and swollen glands in the neck can accompany strep throat, but symptoms do not establish the cause by themselves.
Antibiotics target bacteria; they do not help a viral sore throat. Taking an antibiotic without an assessment can expose you to side effects and may delay the right explanation for your symptoms.
What may help at home
Rest, drink fluids frequently, and choose soft foods if swallowing is uncomfortable. Warm drinks, cool liquids, or salt-water gargles may soothe the throat. A pharmacist can advise on suitable pain or fever medicine, taking into account your age, pregnancy, allergies, and other medicines.
If prescribed an antibiotic, take it exactly as directed and complete the course unless the prescriber changes the plan. Avoid sharing cups, cutlery, or toothbrushes while you are unwell, and wash your hands after coughing or sneezing. A GP consultation is useful when symptoms are severe, persistent, or difficult to distinguish from another throat condition.
Warning signs
Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, severe one-sided throat pain, a muffled voice, or difficulty opening the mouth. These signs can indicate swelling or an abscess around the tonsil. Contact a clinician promptly for dehydration, worsening fever, a spreading rash, or symptoms that are not settling. Children who appear unusually sleepy or cannot drink need prompt assessment.
Useful questions
Ask whether testing is needed, what findings support strep throat rather than tonsillitis or a viral illness, which symptom medicines are safe for you, and when you can return to work or school. Mention medicine allergies and any difficulty swallowing, breathing, or drinking.

Questions people ask
Can strep throat improve without antibiotics?
Symptoms may change over time, but suspected bacterial infection should be assessed so a clinician can decide whether antibiotics are appropriate.
What should I eat with a sore throat?
Soft foods and cool or warm drinks can be easier to swallow; keep drinking enough to avoid dehydration.
