Ways to Treat Heat Rash

Short answer
Heat rash is usually eased by cooling the skin, keeping it dry, and reducing friction while watching for worsening inflammation or infection.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical trigger
- Heat, sweating, blocked sweat ducts, or friction
- First measure
- Cool and dry the affected skin
What heat rash means
Heat rash, also called prickly heat or miliaria, develops when sweat becomes trapped in the skin. It can cause clusters of small bumps, itching, stinging, or redness, especially in covered areas and skin folds. A skin rash or bumps after heat exposure can have other causes, so the pattern and timing matter.
What to do at home
Move to a cooler environment and let the skin dry naturally. Wear loose, breathable clothing and change out of damp garments. Use a cool, clean compress for short periods, and wash gently without scrubbing. Avoid heavy ointments, fragranced products, and activities that cause more sweating until the skin settles. A light emollient may help if the surface feels dry, but ask a pharmacist or clinician before using medicated creams on a baby or large area. Topical corticosteroids are sometimes used for significant inflammation, but they should be chosen and used with professional guidance.
When to seek care
Seek medical advice if the rash does not improve after cooling and gentle care, keeps returning, or becomes painful, markedly swollen, warm, wet, or crusted. Get prompt help for fever, spreading redness, pus, severe tenderness, breathing difficulty, confusion, or a person who appears seriously unwell. A clinician can distinguish heat rash from infection, allergy, or another cause of skin redness.
Questions for your doctor
Does this pattern fit heat rash? Which products should I avoid? Is an emollient or topical corticosteroid appropriate for this body area? How should I prevent recurrence in hot weather?

Questions people ask
Should I cover heat rash?
Loose breathable clothing can protect the area, but tight or non-breathable coverings may trap heat and sweat.
Can I use any steroid cream?
Do not self-select a steroid for a child, the face, or a large area; get advice about the product and duration first.
