Ways to remove eye bags

Morning puffiness can reflect fluid movement, salt intake, irritation or rubbing. A lasting bulge may come from fat beneath the lower eyelid pushing forward, while loose skin can add folds. A hollow beside the bag can cast a dark shadow and make the contour look deeper. Droopy eyelids and tear-trough hollows are related concerns but require different assessments.

For temporary puffiness, a cool compress, adequate rest and avoiding eye rubbing may help. Treating allergies or irritated skin can reduce swelling when those are contributing. Under-eye filler may be considered for selected hollows, not for every bulge. Eyelid surgery can address excess skin and some fat prominence when anatomy and health make it appropriate; a consultation should include eye-surface symptoms and vision concerns.

Seek prompt care for sudden swelling, severe pain, redness, fever, injury, discharge or any change in vision, especially when one eye is affected. Ongoing swelling with breathing symptoms also needs medical attention.

Ask whether the bag is fluid, fat, loose skin or a hollow; whether eyelid surgery or another option addresses that anatomy; and how dry eyes, allergies and recovery may affect the plan.
