Watery runny nose: what to know

Allergic rhinitis can produce clear fluid, sneezing, itching, and watery eyes after contact with pollen, dust, or animals. A common cold may start with a watery runny nose and later include congestion, sore throat, cough, or tiredness. Influenza and COVID-19 can cause nasal symptoms alongside a more noticeable feverish or unwell feeling. Sinusitis becomes more relevant when facial pressure, reduced smell, thick discharge, or symptoms that persist are present. Non-infectious irritation from smoke, strong scents, dry air, or temperature changes can also trigger drainage. The fluid’s appearance alone does not identify the cause.

Use tissues gently and wash your hands after blowing your nose. Saline spray may soothe and clear irritants; follow product directions and use clean equipment. Reduce smoke, perfume, and other obvious irritants. If allergy is suspected, note the setting and timing, wash your face after outdoor exposure, and keep sleeping areas as free of dust as practical. Rest and drink fluids when infection is possible. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on treatment, particularly if you have another condition or take regular medicines.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, confusion, severe weakness, swelling of the lips or tongue, or a serious allergic reaction. Arrange medical advice for severe facial pain, repeated nosebleeds, one-sided foul-smelling discharge, symptoms after a head injury, or a runny nose that keeps returning or interferes with sleep. Fever with chest pain or dehydration also needs prompt assessment.
