Watery Eyes and Runny Nose: What Should You Know?

Allergic rhinitis can cause clear nasal drainage, sneezing, an itchy nose, and watery or itchy eyes. Symptoms may appear after exposure to pollen, dust, or other triggers and can continue while the trigger is present. House dust mite allergy and pet allergy are examples of more specific allergic triggers.

A common cold can also cause a runny or blocked nose, watery eyes, sore throat, cough, tiredness, or a mild fever. Influenza and COVID-19 may overlap with cold symptoms, but fever, marked aches, chills, or a stronger feeling of being unwell can make medical advice more useful. Sinusitis may cause facial pressure, thick nasal discharge, or symptoms that persist or worsen after an initial respiratory illness.

The symptom combination does not identify one diagnosis by itself. A clinician may consider the timing, nasal discharge, eye symptoms, exposure history, temperature, breathing, and how long the problem has lasted.

Reduce contact with a suspected trigger, keep indoor spaces well ventilated, and avoid rubbing your eyes. Saline nasal rinsing or drops may help clear mucus and irritants; use clean water and follow the product instructions. A cool, clean compress over closed eyelids can soothe watering or irritation.

Rest and drink fluids if you have cold-like symptoms. Wash your hands regularly and avoid sharing cups or towels while you are unwell. A pharmacist can explain whether an antihistamine, eye drop, or other treatment is suitable, especially if you are pregnant, treating a child, or taking regular medicines. Do not use someone else’s prescription eye drops.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, severe eye pain, a sudden change in vision, or an eye injury involving a chemical or foreign object. These signs need prompt assessment.

Arrange medical advice if symptoms are severe, keep returning, interfere with sleep or daily activities, or do not improve as expected. Contact a clinician for a high or persistent fever, significant facial pain, dehydration, or worsening symptoms after initial improvement. A baby, older adult, or person with a weakened immune system may need earlier advice.
