What is water motion sickness?

Short answer
Motion on water can confuse balance signals from your eyes and inner ear, causing nausea, dizziness, sweating, or vomiting.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main trigger
- A mismatch between visual movement and inner-ear motion signals
- Helpful position
- Fresh air, a horizon view, and a steady head
Why it happens
On a boat, your inner ear senses rocking while your eyes may focus on a cabin or screen that appears still. This mismatch can activate the brain pathways that produce motion sickness. Symptoms may include nausea, cold sweating, pallor, headache, dizziness, and vomiting. They often ease when motion stops, but repeated vomiting can cause dehydration. Strong smells, reading, and looking down at a device may make the experience worse.
How to reduce symptoms
Choose a place with fresh air and a clear view of the horizon, and keep your head as still as practical. Face the direction of travel, avoid reading, and take small sips of water. Eat light meals rather than travelling with an empty or very full stomach. Ask a pharmacist or travel clinician about prevention before departure; some medicines cause drowsiness and may not suit every person. A travel health consultation can help if you have medical conditions or a demanding journey.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, chest pain, blood in vomit, or inability to keep fluids down. Get medical advice if vomiting continues after travel, urine becomes very dark, you pass very little urine, or dizziness remains when you are still. Symptoms that occur without motion, or with severe headache, hearing loss, weakness, or difficulty walking, need assessment for another cause.
Questions for your doctor
Which preventive medicine is suitable for my age, pregnancy status, and current medicines? When should I take it? How can I replace fluids if vomiting starts? Could my symptoms indicate something other than motion sickness?
