Can water in the ear cause vertigo?

Trapped water commonly causes a muffled sound, fullness, itching, or irritation in the ear canal. Those sensations can make you feel off balance, but vertigo is a distinct spinning or movement sensation. Inner-ear balance problems, including benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, Ménière's disease, migraine, or a middle-ear infection, can produce vertigo. A clinician may ask whether the room spins, whether head movement triggers it, and whether you have hearing change, ringing, pain, fever, or discharge.

Tilt your head so the affected ear faces down and gently pull the outer ear in different directions. Let gravity drain the water, then dry only the outside with a towel. Do not put cotton buds, fingers, or household objects into the canal, and avoid forceful syringing. Keep the ear dry while it feels irritated. If spinning persists after the water has drained, arrange a medical assessment; treatment depends on the cause and may include a clinician-guided Epley manoeuvre for suitable positional vertigo.

Seek urgent help for vertigo with new weakness, facial drooping, trouble speaking, fainting, severe sudden headache, chest pain, or inability to walk safely. Arrange prompt review for severe ear pain, fever, pus or blood, sudden hearing loss, repeated vomiting, or symptoms after a head injury. A persistent or recurrent spinning sensation should be assessed even when the ear only feels wet.
