What should you know about water exercises for back pain?

Short answer
Water exercises can support back pain by reducing body-weight loading, adding gentle resistance, and allowing controlled movement with less impact.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why water may help
Buoyancy can make walking, leg movements, and trunk exercises feel easier because the water supports some of your weight. Water resistance lets you strengthen gradually without relying on fast or jarring movements. A warm pool may also help you feel less stiff before exercise, although it does not identify the reason for your back pain. Back pain can come from muscles, joints, discs, nerves, or other problems; symptoms that persist or change need an individual assessment. Lumbar spondylosis is one possible condition associated with lower-back symptoms, but the symptom alone cannot diagnose it.
Getting started
Begin with a slow water walk, supported pelvic movements, or gentle leg movements within a comfortable range. Keep your breathing easy and avoid twisting or bending quickly. Use the pool wall or a rail for balance, and ask a physiotherapist to check technique if you are unsure. Increase one aspect of activity at a time and judge your response later that day and the next morning. Stop any movement that causes sharp, spreading, or electric pain.
Warning signs
Seek urgent medical care for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, progressive leg weakness, severe pain after a major injury, or inability to walk safely. Arrange a review for fever, unexplained weight change, pain that is constant at rest, or symptoms that travel down the leg and are worsening. Pool exercise should not delay assessment of these signs.
Questions to ask
Is aquatic exercise suitable for the likely source of my back pain? Which movements should I start with? How should I modify exercise if leg symptoms appear? What should guide my return to walking, lifting, or sport?
