Water breaking at 36 weeks pregnant

Water breaking is rupture of the membranes around the baby. It may be a gush or a persistent trickle, and it can be confused with urine or discharge. At 36 weeks, the pregnancy is close to term but still needs individual assessment. The team may check the fluid, your temperature, contractions, the baby's heart rate, and signs of infection before discussing the next step.

Put on a sanitary pad and note the time, colour, smell, and amount of fluid. Avoid tampons, intercourse, and inserting anything into the vagina until your maternity team advises you. Call the maternity unit and follow its instructions about attending. Continue to notice your baby's movements and take your maternity notes with you.

Seek urgent maternity advice for green or brown fluid, bleeding, fever, worsening or constant pain, regular contractions, feeling unwell, or reduced baby movements. Because 36 weeks is before full term, do not wait at home to see whether labour develops. Heavy bleeding, collapse, or severe breathing difficulty requires emergency services.

Ask how rupture will be confirmed, what monitoring you need, how long observation may last, and what would lead to delivery or treatment. Ask which symptoms should prompt an immediate call after you return home.
