Water breaking with twins

The waters around one or both babies can rupture, and the amount of fluid does not show how many membranes are affected. A gush or ongoing trickle can be hard to distinguish from urine or discharge. In hospital, the team may assess the fluid, contractions, both babies' heart rates, and their positions. Your gestation and the type of twin pregnancy also guide the plan.

Use a sanitary pad, record the time and fluid colour, and avoid intercourse or inserting anything into the vagina. Bring your maternity notes and take advice about eating, drinking, and travel before leaving. Keep track of both babies' movements as you usually do, and tell the team about any change.

Call maternity care urgently for green or brown fluid, bleeding, severe pain, fever, regular contractions, feeling unwell, or reduced movement from either baby. If you feel or see something coming through the vagina after fluid loss, lie down and call emergency services. Do not delay assessment while waiting for labour to begin.

Ask whether one or both sacs appear affected, how each baby is positioned, what monitoring is planned, and when delivery would be recommended. Ask whether a caesarean section could be needed based on position or wellbeing.
