Short answer

If you wake to wetness that may be your waters, put on a pad, note the fluid, and call maternity care.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

At home
Use a pad, not a tampon.
Call
Maternity care if leaking continues or rupture is possible.

Why it can be hard to tell

A full bladder, sweat, discharge, or urine leakage can wet bedding during sleep. Amniotic fluid may be a sudden release or a continuing trickle, and you may not feel it happen. Look at the fluid on a pad rather than relying on bedding alone. Colour, odour, and ongoing leakage help the maternity team decide whether an examination is needed.

Steps after waking

Put on a clean sanitary pad and change into dry clothing. Write down when you noticed the wetness, whether more fluid appears, and its colour and smell. Do not use a tampon or have intercourse while rupture is possible. Call your maternity unit for advice, and take your maternity notes if they ask you to attend.

When to seek urgent care

Get urgent advice if the fluid is green or brown, you have bleeding, fever, constant or severe pain, regular tightening, feel unwell, or notice fewer baby movements. Suspected leaking before full term needs prompt review because it may accompany preterm labour. Call emergency services for heavy bleeding, collapse, or serious breathing difficulty.

Questions for your maternity team

Ask how to collect useful information about the leak, whether you need an examination, how to check movements overnight, and which symptoms require immediate return.

Questions people ask

What if the wetness stops?

Tell your maternity team what happened even if the pad stays dry, because a small leak can be intermittent.

Can I go back to sleep?

Call for advice first if your waters may have broken, especially if you are not yet full term or have any warning symptoms.
