Water Break but No Contractions

The membranes may open before the uterus begins regular contractions. Fluid can leak as a gush or a continuing trickle, and the absence of contractions does not show whether the fluid is amniotic fluid. A clinician may need to check your symptoms, the fluid, your temperature, and the baby’s wellbeing. If the pregnancy is before term, a water break may occur alongside preterm labour; the symptom is not proof that this condition is present.

Put on a clean pad and record when the leak began, its colour, amount, and smell. Do not use a tampon or insert anything into the vagina. Call your maternity unit rather than waiting for contractions to develop. Keep track of fetal movements and tell the team about bleeding, fever, pain, recent illness, and your pregnancy stage. Follow their instructions about travel and examination.

Contact urgent maternity services for reduced baby movements, green or brown fluid, bleeding, fever, chills, a foul smell, or severe or continuing abdominal pain. Call emergency services if you feel faint, have severe pain, or see the cord or a body part at the vaginal opening. Ask how the membranes will be checked, when you should return if contractions remain absent, and how to monitor temperature and movements. Ask for clear instructions about fluid changes, bathing, sexual activity, and who to call if symptoms begin overnight.
