What Does a Water Break Mean in Pregnancy?

The fluid may come as a sudden gush or a slow, repeated trickle that dampens underwear. It is often clear or pale, but appearance alone cannot confirm the source; urine and vaginal discharge can be confusingly similar. Waters breaking can happen before contractions, during labour, or before term. When it occurs before term, the clinical concern may include preterm labour, but leaking fluid does not tell you by itself which condition is present.

Use a clean sanitary or maternity pad and note the time, colour, amount, and smell. Contact your maternity unit, midwife, or obstetric team, even if the leak is small or stops. Avoid tampons and inserting anything into the vagina until you receive advice. Tell the team your pregnancy stage, whether the baby is moving normally, and whether you have pain, contractions, bleeding, or fever.

Seek urgent assessment for bleeding, green or brown fluid, a bad smell, fever, chills, feeling unwell, severe pain, or reduced baby movements.
