How Long After Your Water Break Until Delivery?

Some people develop contractions soon after the membranes open, while others do not have immediate labour pain. Your care plan depends on pregnancy stage, the baby’s position and wellbeing, your temperature and other examination findings, the fluid’s appearance, and whether there are signs of infection or bleeding. A suspected break before term is managed differently from a break at term and may indicate preterm labour, though the symptom alone cannot identify the condition.

Write down when the fluid first appeared and whether it was a gush or trickle. Use a clean pad, not a tampon, and note the fluid’s colour and smell. Contact the maternity unit for instructions and take your pregnancy records with you. Ask whether you should eat, drink, travel, or come directly to the hospital. Do not wait for a delivery estimate before reporting the water break.

Seek urgent maternity assessment for fever, chills, feeling unwell, heavy bleeding, green or brown fluid, severe or persistent pain, or reduced baby movements.
