Water Break but No Labour Pain

The amniotic membranes can open before the uterus starts contracting. You might notice a gush, damp underwear, or a repeated small leak rather than pain. Urine leakage and increased discharge can look similar, so a clinician may need to review the history, examine the fluid, and check maternal and fetal wellbeing. The pregnancy stage matters: a suspected break before term raises concern for preterm labour and needs prompt assessment, but no pain does not by itself establish a diagnosis.

Place a clean pad in your underwear and note the time, amount, colour, and smell of the fluid. Avoid tampons, vaginal intercourse, and inserting anything into the vagina until your team advises otherwise. Call the maternity unit rather than waiting for pain to begin. Have your pregnancy records ready and tell them about bleeding, fever, recent illness, your pregnancy stage, and any change in fetal movement. Follow the agreed route for examination.

Get urgent help for green or brown fluid, bleeding, fever, chills, feeling unwell, severe abdominal pain, or reduced fetal movement.
