At this stage, a gush or trickle may be amniotic fluid, urine, or vaginal discharge, and the distinction cannot be made reliably by appearance alone. If the membranes have opened, clinicians will consider the pregnancy stage, your symptoms, infection signs, bleeding, and the baby’s wellbeing. They may use an examination, a fluid test, temperature checks, blood tests, and ultrasound when appropriate. A suspected early rupture can be associated with preterm labour and requires an individual care plan.

Call your maternity unit or go to an emergency department with maternity support now. Use a clean pad to collect fluid and note its colour, smell, and when the leakage began. Do not use a tampon, have intercourse, or place anything in the vagina while waiting for advice. Take your pregnancy records and medication details, but do not postpone assessment to gather belongings.

Call emergency services for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fainting, difficulty breathing, fever with feeling unwell, or tissue or a cord at the vaginal opening. Tell the team immediately about chills, worsening abdominal tenderness, unpleasant-smelling fluid, or contractions. Reduced movements also needs urgent advice, although movements can vary at this stage.

Ask how the diagnosis will be confirmed, what monitoring is planned, which infection symptoms to report, and how the team will discuss pregnancy options and follow-up. Ask who to contact at any hour if leakage or pain changes.
