Water boils on the skin: what they can mean

A boil begins around a hair follicle and can develop into a deeper collection of pus. It may feel warm, swollen, and painful, with a central soft or draining area. A lump is a presentation of boils, but not every skin lump is a boil. Cysts, irritated follicles, and other lesions can look similar, so a clinician may need to examine it, particularly if it is firm, deep, or repeatedly returns. Apply a warm, clean compress for short periods, keep the area covered if it drains, and wash your hands after touching it. Do not cut, needle, or squeeze the lump, and do not share towels, razors, or clothing that contacts drainage. Avoid applying leftover antibiotics or harsh antiseptics without advice. Seek prompt care if redness is expanding, pain is worsening, drainage has an unpleasant smell, or the lump lies near the eye, nose, or genitals. Fever, chills, red streaks, marked weakness, or several new lumps warrant urgent assessment. Contact a clinician sooner if you have diabetes, reduced immunity, poor circulation, or repeated boils. Ask whether the lump is a boil, cyst, or another lesion; whether it needs drainage; how to cover it; and whether household contacts need hygiene advice. Tell the clinician when it began, whether it changed size, and whether you have had fever or previous episodes.
