Water bag break symptoms

The fluid may be clear, pale, or slightly pink and can continue leaking when you change position, walk, cough, or bear down. It may be difficult to distinguish amniotic fluid from urine or normal pregnancy discharge at home. A maternity clinician can assess the history and perform an examination or fluid test when appropriate. Waters breaking can happen with contractions, before contractions, or before labour is expected; timing in pregnancy affects the urgency and care plan.

Note the time, colour, smell, and approximate amount of fluid. Use a clean maternity pad rather than a tampon, and avoid putting anything into the vagina until you have received advice. Contact your maternity unit or obstetric team, even if the leak is small or stops. Keep the pad available for clinicians to see, and mention contractions, pain, fever, bleeding, or changes in baby movements.

Seek urgent maternity assessment for green or brown fluid, fresh bleeding, fever, worsening abdominal pain, regular contractions, reduced baby movements, or feeling faint or unwell. A visible cord or something coming through the vagina is an emergency: call emergency services and lie on your side while waiting. Leaking fluid before the expected time of birth needs prompt advice because it may be linked with preterm labour.

Ask how your waters will be confirmed, whether you should remain in hospital, which warning signs to watch for, and how the plan changes according to your stage of pregnancy and test results.
