What should you know about wart removal bandages?

A dressing may be useful after a procedure or while a medicated product is being used. It can stop a shoe, sock, or fingertip from repeatedly rubbing the wart, and it can reduce picking. The dressing should not be so tight that the surrounding skin becomes pale, blue, numb, or increasingly painful. A wart may still look raised or rough while the surface settles, so appearance alone does not show whether treatment has worked.

Follow the clinician's instructions about when to cover the area and when to leave it open. Change a damp, dirty, loose, or peeling bandage with clean hands. Keep the surrounding skin clean and dry, and avoid sharing towels, socks, nail tools, or footwear. Do not cut, scrape, or burn the wart under a dressing. If an adhesive causes itching or a rash, remove it and ask about a gentler dressing; protect the area from rubbing in another way.

Arrange medical advice if redness spreads beyond the treated area, warmth and swelling increase, pus appears, or pain keeps worsening. Seek prompt care for fever, red streaks, marked numbness, or skin that turns dark and continues to deteriorate. A wart on the face, genitals, or near a nail deserves professional assessment, as does a lesion that bleeds, changes quickly, or may not be a wart.

Ask which dressing suits the treatment, how often it should be changed, whether swimming or exercise needs special precautions, and what signs mean the skin is reacting to the product rather than healing.
