Wart on heel removal: what to know

A plantar wart can grow beneath the thick skin of the heel. Walking and standing press the lesion inward, creating tenderness and sometimes interrupting normal activity. It may have a rough surface or small dark dots, but a callus can look similar. A clinician may assess the skin lines, tenderness, and appearance before choosing treatment. The heel’s thick skin can also affect how much treatment is needed and how the area feels while it heals.

A dermatology clinician may discuss removal methods such as freezing, medicines applied to the lesion, or another procedure suited to its size and position. Do not cut into the heel or use strong wart products on broken skin. Keep feet dry, change socks regularly, and avoid sharing footwear or towels. Cushioned footwear can reduce pressure while you wait for review. Tell the clinician about diabetes, poor circulation, reduced sensation, pregnancy, or medicines that affect healing before treatment.

Book an assessment if the heel lesion is painful, spreading, recurring, or uncertain. Seek prompt care for bleeding, pus, increasing warmth, spreading redness, or pain that makes walking difficult. Do not self-treat a changing or bleeding lesion without an examination, particularly if you have reduced sensation or circulation.
