Walking With an MCL Injury: What to Know

Short answer
Walking with an MCL injury may be possible, but pain and knee instability should guide a protected, gradual return rather than forcing normal activity.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main concern
- Pain and instability on the inner side of the knee.
- Early activity
- Avoid pivoting, running and contact while symptomatic.
- Progression
- Restore motion, strength and balance before sport.
How an MCL injury affects walking
The medial collateral ligament runs along the inner side of the knee and helps resist the knee moving inward. An injury may cause inner-knee pain, swelling, tenderness and a feeling that the joint gives way, especially when turning or changing direction. The ability to walk does not show the full extent of the injury; a clinical examination is needed, and other knee structures can be injured at the same time.
Early walking is often more comfortable with shorter steps and the knee kept aligned over the foot. A [Knee Bracing](/treatments/non-surgical-orthopedics/knee-bracing/) page explains how external support may be used when recommended.
How to move safely
Use the weight-bearing plan given after examination. Rest from pivoting, running and contact activity while the knee is painful or unstable. Ice wrapped in cloth, elevation and a clinician-approved pain plan may help early symptoms. Use a walking aid if you limp or cannot place weight comfortably. As movement improves, [Physiotherapy](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/physiotherapy/) can address knee motion, thigh strength, balance and control. Progress should be based on function, not a calendar alone.
Return to sport requires more than being able to walk. A [Return-to-Sport Programme](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/return-to-sport-programme/) can build from controlled exercises to direction changes and sport-specific drills.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt assessment if you cannot bear weight, the knee repeatedly gives way, swelling appears quickly, or pain is severe after the injury. Seek urgent help for a cold or pale foot, new numbness, marked calf swelling, chest pain or breathlessness. Get reviewed if symptoms are not improving or your knee remains unstable during ordinary walking.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which activities and amount of weight are safe, whether you need a brace or crutches, how the ligament will be assessed, and what milestones should come before jogging, driving or sport.
