What should you know about waking up with bloodshot eyes?

Waking with bloodshot eyes can result from dryness, irritation, allergy, or conjunctivitis, while pain or vision change needs prompt care. Overnight dryness, rubbing, contact lenses, smoke, and poor tear spread can make the eye look red in the morning. The appearance alone does not establish the cause.

Itching and watery eyes often accompany allergic irritation. A sticky discharge, eyelids stuck together, or redness spreading through the day can occur with conjunctivitis. A gritty feeling may reflect surface dryness or irritation. One sharply defined red patch can be a small surface bleed, but recurrent redness should still be discussed with a clinician, particularly if you use contact lenses or blood-thinning medicine.

Do not rub the eyes. Wash your hands, gently clean discharge with clean water, and use a cool compress for itch or swelling. Avoid contact lenses and eye makeup until the eye is comfortable and any discharge has settled. Lubricating drops may help dryness; ask a pharmacist which product suits you, and avoid sharing towels, pillows, or eye products if infection is possible.

Seek urgent eye care for severe pain, reduced or blurred vision, marked light sensitivity, injury, chemical exposure, a bulging eye, or nausea with intense headache. Contact lens wearers with a painful red eye need prompt assessment. Arrange review if redness persists, keeps returning, or comes with significant discharge.
