Vomiting blood with throat pain

Repeated or forceful vomiting can inflame the throat and cause small tears near the junction with the oesophagus. Stomach acid can add a burning sensation. Throat pain can also come from an infection or irritation that happened before the vomiting. The colour of the blood, the timing of pain, and whether swallowing is difficult help guide assessment.

Oesophageal cancer can present with swallowing problems or bleeding, but throat pain with vomiting blood does not by itself identify cancer. Stomach cancer is another condition a clinician may consider among many possible explanations, including ulcers and medication-related irritation.

Seek medical advice promptly and keep a record of the episode. Do not force food or large drinks if swallowing is painful or vomiting continues. Avoid alcohol and anti-inflammatory painkillers unless a clinician has specifically advised them. Bring details of medicines, recent illness, repeated retching, and any black bowel movements.

Use emergency services for continuing or large-volume bleeding, faintness, clammy skin, confusion, trouble breathing, severe chest or abdominal pain, inability to swallow saliva, or marked weakness. These symptoms can indicate serious bleeding, a tear, or another condition needing immediate treatment.

Ask whether the pain suggests surface irritation or a deeper injury, whether tests are needed to locate bleeding, and which pain relief is suitable. Tell the clinician if swallowing solids or liquids has recently become harder.
