Vomiting Blood and Blood Pressure: What to Know

Blood loss can reduce the amount of blood returning to the heart. The body may respond with a faster pulse, pale skin, sweating, dizziness, or weakness; a later fall in blood pressure can signal worsening circulation. A single home reading cannot show how much blood has been lost, and a normal reading does not rule out early bleeding. Causes may include an ulcer, irritation, a tear after retching, or enlarged veins. Oesophageal cancer and stomach cancer may be considered during a full assessment, but blood pressure does not identify the cause.

Sit or lie safely while arranging urgent care, and do not stand suddenly if you feel faint. Do not drive yourself. Avoid food, alcohol, and non-prescribed anti-inflammatory painkillers. Bring your medicine list and tell clinicians about blood thinners, blood-pressure medicines, liver disease, previous ulcers, and the timing and appearance of the vomit. Do not take extra fluids as a substitute for assessment if vomiting continues.

Call emergency services for fainting, confusion, cold clammy skin, rapid breathing, severe weakness, a fast or irregular heartbeat, ongoing vomiting, increasing blood, or difficulty staying awake. Black stools, breathlessness, chest pain, or severe abdominal pain also need immediate help. Do not wait for a low home blood-pressure reading before seeking care.

Ask whether your pulse and blood pressure suggest fluid loss, which tests can locate the source, and whether an endoscopy is needed. Confirm how to manage regular blood-pressure or blood-thinning medicines and what symptoms mean you should return immediately.
