What Vomiting Blood Is Called

Haematemesis means blood has been brought up by vomiting. It may look bright red, dark red, brown, or like coffee grounds. The blood often comes from the food pipe, stomach, or first part of the small intestine, although swallowed blood from the nose or mouth can have a similar appearance. A tear after forceful retching, an ulcer, inflammation, or enlarged veins are possible causes. Oesophageal cancer and stomach cancer can also be assessed when the history or examination suggests them; haematemesis itself is not a diagnosis of cancer.

Treat the event as medically significant, even if you feel better afterward. Avoid food, alcohol, and non-prescribed anti-inflammatory painkillers while arranging advice. Sit upright, or lie on your side if nausea or weakness makes sitting unsafe. Record when it began, the colour and texture, whether retching came first, and any black stool. Tell the clinician about aspirin, blood thinners, liver disease, previous ulcers, and recent vomiting.

Get emergency help immediately if blood continues, the amount increases, you pass black stools, or you develop faintness, confusion, severe weakness, clammy skin, breathing difficulty, or chest or abdominal pain. Do not travel alone when you feel unstable. Prompt evaluation is needed even without these warning signs because the bleeding source may not be visible from symptoms alone.

Ask whether your episode fits haematemesis, what tests can locate the source, and whether you need an endoscopy. Clarify which medicines are safe, how to prevent another episode, and which changes require emergency care.
