Vomiting Blood in the Morning: What to Know

Bright-red blood may indicate relatively fresh bleeding. Dark brown or grainy material can look like coffee grounds after blood has stayed in the stomach and changed with stomach acid. Swallowed blood from a nosebleed or bleeding in the mouth can also be vomited. Other causes include irritation, an ulcer, inflammation, or enlarged veins in the food pipe or stomach. Cancer of the food pipe or stomach is among the conditions a clinician may consider, but vomiting blood does not by itself identify cancer.

Stop eating and drinking until a clinician advises you, especially if vomiting continues. Sit upright or lie on your side if you feel faint. Note the colour and approximate amount, whether the material was gritty, and any medicines such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory painkillers, or blood thinners. Do not drive yourself if you are weak or dizzy. Take your medicine list and, if safe, a photo of the vomit to the assessment.

Seek emergency care now for repeated vomiting, a large amount of blood, black stools, fainting, confusion, cold clammy skin, fast breathing, severe weakness, or trouble staying awake. Chest or abdominal pain also needs urgent assessment. Even a small first episode should be assessed promptly because the source may need examination and treatment.

Ask what source of bleeding is most likely, whether you need blood tests or an endoscopy, and which medicines should be paused or continued. Ask how to recognise renewed bleeding and what follow-up is needed if the first examination is reassuring.
