Vomiting blood with gastritis: what to know

Gastritis means inflammation of the stomach lining. Irritation can cause soreness, nausea, or vomiting, and repeated retching can add a small tear or make bleeding more likely. Other causes include an ulcer, medicine-related injury, alcohol-related irritation, or bleeding higher in the food pipe. Vomiting blood does not confirm gastritis, and gastritis does not explain every episode. Clinicians may consider stomach cancer or oesophageal cancer if the pattern, examination, or ongoing symptoms make those conditions relevant.

Contact an urgent medical service for advice and mention any diagnosis of gastritis, recent alcohol use, pain medicines, blood thinners, or previous bleeding. Avoid alcohol and do not add aspirin or ibuprofen unless prescribed. Do not start or stop acid-suppressing or other medicines without advice. Keep track of vomit colour, black stools, pain, dizziness, and whether fluids stay down.

Go to an emergency department or call emergency services for continuing blood, coffee-ground vomit, fainting, confusion, severe pain, trouble breathing, cold clammy skin, a racing heartbeat, or severe weakness. Black, tarry stool also needs urgent attention. Even a small-looking episode should not be dismissed if it returns, follows a medicine change, or occurs with dizziness.

Ask whether tests are needed to distinguish gastritis from an ulcer or another bleeding source, whether you need an endoscopy, and which pain medicines are safer. Ask what treatment is appropriate for the likely cause and which changes require emergency review.
