Vomiting blood with a hangover: what should you know?

A hangover can cause nausea, but red blood, dark material resembling coffee grounds, or vomit mixed with clots suggests bleeding in the upper digestive tract. Repeated retching can injure the lining or cause a small tear. Alcohol can also irritate the stomach and worsen bleeding from an existing problem.

Oesophageal Cancer and Stomach Cancer are among the conditions clinicians may consider, but vomiting blood has many possible causes and does not establish a cancer diagnosis. The urgent question is whether bleeding is continuing and whether your body is becoming unwell.

Seek emergency care for blood in vomit. Ask someone to stay with you, do not drive, and avoid further alcohol. If you are awake, sit upright; if you are faint or sleepy, lie on your side so vomit is less likely to block your airway.

Take or show clinicians your medicines, especially anticoagulants or anti-inflammatory painkillers. Describe the vomit colour, number of episodes, abdominal symptoms, and whether you have passed black stools. Do not rely on water, food, or an over-the-counter remedy to stop the bleeding.

Call emergency services immediately for bright red or coffee-ground vomit, fainting, confusion, severe weakness, severe abdominal or chest pain, rapid breathing, pale clammy skin, or black tar-like stools. These signs can accompany serious blood loss.

Even a small streak should receive prompt clinical advice if it follows repeated retching, returns, or occurs with ongoing pain or dizziness. Do not wait for the hangover to pass before arranging assessment.

Ask: Could retching have caused a tear? Are my medicines or liver health relevant? Do I need tests to check blood loss or the upper digestive tract? What symptoms mean I should return immediately, and what can reduce the chance of another episode?
