What should you know about a volume displacement spirometer?

When you breathe into the device, the incoming air moves a chamber, piston, or indicator. That movement represents the volume inhaled and lets you see whether your breath is steady. These devices are used to practise lung expansion, particularly when discomfort or limited mobility encourages shallow breaths. The display is a guide for exercise, not a complete measurement of lung health.

Sit tall, relax your neck, and hold the unit upright on a firm surface or as instructed. Place the mouthpiece securely, breathe in slowly, and aim for a smooth rise rather than a sudden pull. Follow your clinician’s advice about pausing, repeating, and coughing. Stop if you feel faint, breathe normally until settled, and ask your team to check your technique if the marker does not move as expected. Keep the mouthpiece clean.
