Vitcoco otoscope: what to know

An otoscope uses a light and viewing tip to inspect the ear canal and eardrum. A connected or digital model may display or store an image, which can support discussion during an assessment. An image alone cannot reliably identify every cause of pain, reduced hearing, discharge or fever. Wax, movement, a narrow canal and poor positioning can limit what is visible, especially in young children.

Use the device only according to its instructions and with a clean, suitable tip. Never force the tip into the ear, use it to dig out wax, or examine an ear after injury without advice. Keep the person still and stop if there is pain, bleeding or distress. Share images with a healthcare professional rather than choosing antibiotic or ear-drop treatment from a picture. A GP or child health consultation can combine the image with history and examination.

Arrange prompt assessment for severe ear pain, sudden hearing loss, blood or pus, a foreign object, swelling behind the ear, dizziness, or fever in a very unwell child. Seek urgent help after a significant head or ear injury. Do not delay care because an image looks reassuring; symptoms and examination findings guide treatment.

Is the image clear enough to interpret? Could wax, infection or injury explain the symptoms? Should the ear be examined in person? Which drops or cleaning methods are safe, and when should hearing be checked?
