What should you know about visible Demodex mites on the face?

Demodex can live in facial follicles without causing symptoms. When an overgrowth or skin reaction is suspected, a person may notice roughness, small bumps, redness, burning, itching, flaky skin, or irritated eyelid margins. Rosacea is one possible related condition, but facial redness or bumps can also come from acne, contact irritation, folliculitis, or another dermatitis. A clinician may examine the skin and, when useful, sample surface material or follicular contents.

Use a gentle cleanser, avoid scrubbing or squeezing bumps, and pause newly introduced fragranced products if they sting. Wash pillowcases and towels regularly, and avoid sharing face cloths or eye makeup. Do not apply insecticides, household products, or unprescribed medicines to facial skin. A dermatologist can decide whether targeted topical treatment, treatment for rosacea, or another approach fits the examination.

Arrange an appointment if irritation persists, spreads, repeatedly flares, or affects the eyelids or eyes. Seek prompt care for eye pain, light sensitivity, vision change, marked swelling, pus, or fever. These features can signal a problem needing treatment beyond routine skin care.
