Viremia and chikungunya: what should you know?

During viremia, an infected person's blood contains circulating virus. Chikungunya commonly begins with a sudden fever and marked pain in several joints, sometimes with muscle aches, headache, rash or tiredness. The intensity of joint symptoms can make walking and daily tasks difficult. Symptoms overlap with other infections, so the pattern, travel or mosquito exposure and examination matter when a clinician considers the diagnosis.

Rest, drink fluids and use a cool environment if fever makes you uncomfortable. Ask a clinician or pharmacist which pain and fever medicine is suitable, particularly if dengue is possible or you take medicines affecting bleeding. During the early illness, prevent mosquito bites with clothing, screens and repellent so mosquitoes do not acquire the virus and pass it to others. Record fever, joint swelling, rash, fluid intake and urine output.

Arrange a GP consultation for suspected chikungunya, especially after travel or mosquito exposure, because similar illnesses need different precautions. Seek urgent care for severe dehydration, breathing difficulty, confusion, fainting, persistent vomiting, unusual bleeding, severe abdominal pain or inability to walk safely. Babies, older adults, pregnant people and those with significant medical conditions may need earlier assessment.

Ask whether testing is needed, which pain reliever is safest, how to protect people around you from mosquito transmission, and what joint symptoms should be monitored after the fever settles. Mention travel dates, mosquito bites, pregnancy, existing conditions and all medicines.
